Labral Tear Relief

Choosing Exercise Instead of Surgery

If you have been diagnosed, you may have even been told you should have a repair surgery or you should just go ahead and replace your whole hip joint.

And you may have been left with news that a whopping 40-50% of these repair surgeries last more than five years if you remain active.

A flood of confusion and frustration might have led you down the rabbit hole on Google. And even that can leave you foggier than before you turned on your computer.

So let’s clear a few things up….for real! (I went through this myself and I get it!)

A labral tear is NOT a sentence to an inactive and/or painful life!

A labral tear does not mean you will be sitting around, missing out on travels, dancing all night long at your daughter’s wedding or dropping out of your running group. Over 90% of the time, a labral tear doesn’t have to consume your worries any longer.

Let me explain!

For a tear in the cartilage to happen at all, there must be an imbalance in the hip joint. That means some muscles in your hips are very strong and some are so sleepy they are almost in a coma. You may be lifting weights, doing daily chores, running marathons, dancing or swimming ‘til your heart’s content, feeling strong. And one day, seemingly out of nowhere…pain!

But what you did not realize is that you have been working on this injury for a long time. Because of your imbalance one day that one kick, that one bend, that one movement was too much to bear with that imbalance. And now you’re in shock and don’t understand how this could have happened.

Take a look at the image here.

It shows the imbalance in the hip, which can be related to
spinal issues, knee and foot issues, etc.

Most of the time this injury occurs in active people:

  • dancers

  • swimmers

  • runners

  • practitioners of yoga and pilates

  • going to the gym-ers

And, because you are so healthy, fit and strong, you wonder how this could have happened to you.

So what happens next is really important because it can make or break your decision to have surgery or not.

In the usual course of events, you are sent to physiotherapy. You might have some relief. You might not have enough and find yourself back at the osteopath’s office talking surgery.

But what if you don’t need or want surgery?

A lot of the time this is the case. If you don’t have fraying or multiple tears, the likelihood you don’t need surgery is well over 70%. But MDs don’t study about what’s underneath a tear, the physical reason why the tear was ever allowed to happen in the first place and they don’t study how to create conditions that will render your torn hip pain-free…and being able to get back to dancing, swimming, running, hiking pain-free!

Okay…so you had the surgery already?

Not a problem.

If you have had a repair surgery but are still or again experiencing pain — or maybe you’ve heard the reviews and are worried about future re-tearing (which happens over 50% of the time), I have good news for you too!

The surgery does not do anything to fix the underlying imbalance problem. And physiotherapy doesn’t address that either. But you can!

What you can do for yourself in this situation — you can put your hip in a much better position so you won’t need re-repair surgeries and so you can stop your pain once and for all so it doesn’t come back.

So how are people doing this? How are people taking control of their own health and having the same outcome or better, actually, as having a repair surgery?

First, we learn how to listen and find, where is the imbalance? What is off kilter? Is there a miscommunication happening in my body leading to this hip imbalance? There are very specific determinative exercises that give us clues and answers so we know what areas to focus on the most.

And once we do that we determine which exercises and at what level to work. Because most of the time, the personality types that get this injury are the kind of winners that go the distance to make sure everything is more than 100%. And in this type of recovery work, we learn to dance in the subtle layers of the body so we learn very specific isolated muscular skill so you get to discover a whole world of strength you didn’t know was available before.

And as you feel the small, subtle layers beginning to change, the pain is less and less… until one day… it’s gone!

Hi! I’m Allison and I did this work 14 years ago.

I have not had pain in over 14 years. My doctor said my tear was due to osteoarthritis. I also had SI joint dysfunction and scoliosis to go with it. And he also said my only option was surgery. I was given two choices: a labral tear repair plus years of sitting on my ass not doing the things I really wanted to be doing like yoga, dancing and going to the gym…OR I could wait 2 years ‘til the age of 35 (yep!) to have a hip replacement.

I’m not one to give up easily. And I just knew it deep down — there was something else. And I found it.

My background in movement (dancing since 3 years old, extensive yoga education) and my studies in body mechanics, physiology and Chinese medicine helped for sure. I understood the mechanics of the hip, what had to have happened that I would have this kind of injury and I also could see the energy meridians that were effected.

Necessity is the mother of invention so I created a system for myself. In five months, give or take, I went from sharp, edgy pain to pain-free. And since I was already moonlighting as a yoga instructor, people began to seek my help once they heard about my results.

I also had teachers who supported me. Support and the right mindset goes a loooong way. In fact, it is a huge part. So I my partner Varina who is a mind-body expert and genius will guide you in your development of a new way of communicating with your body so the pain will become your friend rather than your foe.

Varina and I been helping people and supporting them overcome their hip pain and getting free from injuries like labral tears. And they get back to doing things like being a professional dancer, running, lifting their patients from one bed to another in the ICU, picking up their kids and playing without worry or stress. And really this is what it’s all about. Living a full life!

You, too, can have a story like this!

Labral Tear Relief with Biomechanics to Realign Hip Joint

Kerri Niemeyer, dancer

“I had intense hip pain due to torn cartilage in the acetabular labrum (hip joint). Even after following my osteopathic surgeon’s prescribed treatment of cortisone shots and physical therapy, I still had daily pain and I was unable to use my body in the ways I most enjoyed. I was told the next step was surgery. I felt completely stuck.

Then I found Allison. She assured me that her work could allow me to avoid surgery and that I could eventually be pain free. And that is precisely what happened.”
